Cannes and Cheekbones

I've been following the Cannes Festival this year in a bit more detail.
The biggest story from any of these types of events is what the celebs are wearing. But they were only half the story. What about the faces? One need look no further than the multi-billion pound cosmetic industry to know that makeup matters!
I haven't really looked too much before at the celebs faces as much as I have there fabulous dresses... But when looking more closely you can see the amount of skill there is to every aspect, from lipstick application to every well positioned curl in their hair.

One of the women that stuck out the most was Eva Longoria. There are some people in the world that can be made to look beautiful, when they have there features enhanced by makeup to give them the 'beautiful look'. Where as Eva is a naturally beautiful women, and the makeup enhances those features to make her a stunning women.

Looking at her makeup in more detail she has the perfect contoured eye which makes the eyes stand out and make them out to be wide and open.
With a shimmer to the brow bone adds the lifting and openness of the eye. This is something I do on a daily basis on my self, regardless of the colour. I recently have done a tutorial video for 'smokey eyes' which I will post on here soon so you your self can produce that amazing Eva Longoria eye. Its something MUA's have been doing for centuries. Once mastered can be the secret to seductive sexy eyes!

Natural lips with abit of gloss for the glamour look is applied to give the lips a shine.

And then highly defined cheekbones for the contoured cheek. This is something that is very very popular and will never age. Contouring the cheek gives an instant lift to the cheek bone. Looking at other Actresses that have done the same have got it down to a T! No matter the shape or size of your body, contouring is a massive must when it comes to makeup! Even if its very slight it will make a huge different to your face.

Lea Michele aka Rachel Barry from Glee has the ultimate chiselled cheek in this picture. Not all of use are blessed with prominent cheek bone structures so have ti create the illusion that we do!
Just below the cheek bone on an angle stopping just before the apple of the cheek is the perfect contour.
By applying it in a tone 3 or 4 shades lighter than your natural skin tone will give the shadowed look your looking for.
Theres 2 ways you can apply this...
1. Use a foundation on top of your natural skin tone foundation, apply and blend down.
2. Once you have sealed your foundation with a transparent powder (or whatever powder you chose to use) with a bronzer or darker foundation powder apply a line under the cheek bone and buff down.
You then should have something similar to cheekbone structure to Lea's.

Some more examples of the ultimate cheekbones and spectacular eyes have a look at the Cannes Festival on the internet.
Don't just look at the dresses and nice suits. But look at the art that is the makeup. Everyone thinks when you say makeup artist that were the same as a beautician... Were not. If anything it's an insult, makeup is an art, a skill and a profession. Yes everyday makeup like the above may not be 'artistic' or 'inspiring' but there are lots of different aspects to makeup that make it a skill that others cannot do.

All for now!

Geek at Heart

For my friends and family that know me, they know I'm abit of a geek at heart when it comes to films...
For example; Lord of the Rings, Xmen, Batman, Twilight, Iron Man, Alice in Wonderland, Avatar... You get the picture. Anything that has different/challenging makeup. Well the ultimate geek inside me has a huggeeee obsession with no other than Harry Potter.
Ever since I was little Id heard of the books and they never appealed me. I was never a massive reader and had always loved watching films on the tv. So when I heard that they had made the first book into a film we all as a family went to the cinema to see it. I was 11 years old, I remember sitting in the cinema chairs, feet not touching the floor, with my popcorn and sat for the whole 152 minutes of the Philosopher's Stone.
I remember laying in bed and believing it all, wanting to get a letter to go to Hogwarts and see this exciting world for myself.
Now 22 years old, I recognise what the films did to children like me and how they did it. They achieved what they set out to do when making that film... Making the audience believe.
The films are the biggest, most successful movies in box-office history. The following 7 films achieved different heights of magical wonder, and from my point of view make up and special effects grew better and better.

These films had a massive impact on my chosen career. When seeing the films on the big screen, you see every wrinkle on a goblins face, every hair on the giant spider Aragog, every distorted and scary detail of Voldermort's face. With out the skills of the crew that worked on that film, they wouldn't of achieved what they wanted, it wouldn't of looked real.

For christmas just gone, me and my sister where bought tickets to go to the Warner Brothers Studio Tour - The Making of Harry Potter. I was beyond excited!!! We went last friday, and I have to admit, I was running round like a little kid!
The first bit about make up I came across was within seconds of walking out of the Great Hall. There was a make up chair with the classic bulbs around the mirror, make up in tidy piles and brushes ready to go. This got me excited from the off! The make up designer, Amanda Knight, said;
"It was like being a mum and a best friend.. We became involved in all aspects of the actors lives". Working in a close knit environment I can imagine that is how it is. This is something I want to experience for my self.
When walking around, they had a special section to show the sorts of things they used to create the prosthetic pieces for afew of the characters i.e Warwick Davies' Griphook head piece and Fenrir Grey Back's head piece. The amount of detail and time that was spent of those pieces must have taken forever to make.
When going to the tour you fully appreciate what kinda of hard work goes into making such a hit movie series like Harry Potter. If only I had been born earlier and studied earlier in make up, then I'd of done everything and anything to work on those films, with the amazing people that made it all happen.

Lipstick obsession

Right... At the moment i have a HUGEEE obsession with lipsticks.

Bobbi Brown just after christmas launched her nudes and neons collection. Brown smokey eyes with neon lipsticks. When I saw this I got my self down to the shops to see if any of the highstreet brands had picked up on this new trend for the spring.
Revlon and L'oreal had afew good colours in; Wild Orchid and Cassis Passion! Saw them, loved them, bought them!
Then on another day I was flicking through Bazaar and noticed an advert by YSL for a limited matt lipstick collection. By the time Id got my bum down to Debenhams in Lakeside they'd sold out. So as I normally do when I go into Debenhams, I started to wonder around the make up counters when I stopped at Chanel... Bright pink matt lipstick. One word, beautiful! I wear it all the time. Goes with everything, stays on forever and gives you a lil bit of a boost!

Rant over! :D

I recently have been working on afew short films. Both of which were period dramas, set in the 1st and 2nd world war.
This was my first time on a 'film set' and I absolutely loved it! The smell of foundation and minty fake blood at 4:30am, the cold wind on your face and the rain beating on the umbrella on set, the long hours and early starts... I know it all sounds absolutely awful and believe me Im a one for loving my bed, but it's all worth while. To get up to a job that you love, that you have a huge passion for is amazing. I'd want to kill my self if I had to do a 9-5 in an office.
Being on set is fun! You meet all different walks of life, who then become your life while filming. Mucking in, operating a smoke machine, driving the mini cooper down dirt tracks high to the ceiling with camera equipment or making dinner for 7 people!
Everything about it is awesome, fascinsting, incredible and surprisingI recommend this industry to anyone, and anyone trying to get into films... DO IT!

Below are some snap shots from the 2 films i was on... :)

Welcome

Hello everyone and welcome to my first ever blog!

I decided to join the world of blogging as my sister, an aspiring fashion stylist and photographer, told me about the wonders of it all!

My aim is to talk about the wonderful world that is MY world and talk about what that involves... MAKEUP! I am a makeup artist if you hadn't already guessed. Film is where I want to be, but anything that means I get to transform the face of someone and create an 'art' is what Im all about.

I hope you like what I have to say
